Catoctin Mountain Park Mines Its Past For Centennial Event
THURMONT, Md. (AP) — Officials of Catoctin Mountain Park near Thurmont are mining the property's past for a multifaceted celebration of the National Park Service centennial.
Saturday's event at Camp Greentop includes a staff reunion from the longest-running camp for disabled people in the United States. The League for People with Disabilities has operated at Camp Greentop since 1938.
Another reunion is bringing together alumni of the Frederick County Outdoor School, a program for sixth-graders that operated at Camp Greentop from 1957 through 1996.
The park is also recreating a folk craft center that operated at Camp Round Meadow from the late 1960s through 1980. The park says in a statement that the people demonstrating mountain crafts include at least one of the center's original artisans.
