Casey Cares Foundation Gives 2-Year-Old Girl With Leukemia A Birthday Surprise

BALTIMORE (WJZ)—Celebrating birthdays is the best when you're young. But for one special Anne Arundel County girl, turning two was a huge milestone.

Mary Bubala has her story.

Volunteers from the Casey Cares Foundation surprise 2-year-old Giana at her front door, showering her with cake, balloons, cupcakes and presents.

It's an unforgettable birthday celebration for Giana, who is battling leukemia.

Her parents say Giana's critical illness makes it difficult for her to leave the house.

A birthday party was out of the question until Casey Cares' stepped in with a birthday blast.

"We really can't give her a birthday party this year because her blood counts are still pretty low so she can't really be around too many kids, "said Jacob Gude, Giana's dad. "It wasn't going to be a fun 2-year-old birthday, so this is really nice."

Giana is Casey Cares' 500th birthday blast recipient this year alone!

Along with the organization's other programs, they are designed to bring simple pleasures into the lives of families who take nothing for granted.

"We truly believe it's the little things in life that make a huge impact on the lives of these families that must make everyday count," said Casey Baynes, executive director of Casey Cares Foundation.

Giana is currently receiving treatment for her leukemia at the Johns Hopkins Children Center.

Casey Cares was founded more than 14 years ago. It serves critically ill children throughout the mid-Atlantic. For more information on the foundation, click here.
