Carjacking Suspect Struck by Driver He Was Robbing
BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- A carjacking suspect is in serious condition, after being struck by the driver he was robbing, near Lexington Market yesterday evening.
Baltimore Police says it happened around 6 p.m., when officers responded to the 200 block of Clay Street, for a pedestrian, a 41-year-old man, who was struck by a 2006 Hyundai Sonata.
Police say that the driver of the Sonata was parked on Clay Street when a man got into the passenger side of the car and announced a robbery. The driver of the Sonata attempted to flee when two other suspects appeared and tried to enter the car through the driver's side door. They assaulted the driver, took his cell phone and money, and fled on foot. The man still sitting in the passenger seat got out of the car and driver began to drive away, but was then stopped at Clay and Howard Streets by a light rail train in the intersection.
While attempting to drive away, the driver of the Sonata struck the initial suspect who had been in the passenger seat and announced the robbery. But realizing that he'd struck the robber, stayed and called police.
The suspect was taken to Shock Trauma and is expected to survive his injuries. Police say charges are forthcoming once he is discharged from the hospital.
This investigation remains open as detectives are looking to identify the other two suspects. They both are described as black males who look to be in their 40's.
Anyone with information is asked to call detectives at (410) 396-2241 or call Metro Crime Stoppers at 1-866-7LOCKUP.
