Maryland Board OKs Scaled Back Toll Lane Plan

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) — A Maryland board has approved changes in a public-private partnership to add toll lanes to the Capital Beltway and Interstate 270.

The 2-1 vote by the Board of Public Works on Wednesday enables the state to solicit bids for the highway expansion project in the suburbs of Washington to ease traffic congestion.

Gov. Larry Hogan and Comptroller Peter Franchot voted for the plan, while Treasurer Nancy Kopp voted against it.

The changes scale back where toll roads would be on Interstate 495 initially. There won't be toll lanes on I-495, east of I-270 for now. Plans still call for toll roads on I-495 from the George Washington Parkway in Virginia, across the American Legion Bridge, to I-270 in Maryland. The first section that would be delivered under the first phase also would include toll roads along I-270 from I-495 to I-370.

No existing lanes would have tolls.
