Western Md. Woman Dies In Suspected Hit-And-Run

HAGERSTOWN, Md. (AP) -- Hagerstown police are looking for an apparent hit-and-run driver who fatally struck a Cumberland woman as she walked along U.S. 40.

Sgt. John Lehman says Lisa Wellham, 58, was found badly injured in the highway median east of the downtown area at 4:20 a.m. Monday.

Lehman says police had had contact with Wellham two hours earlier when they stopped her car at a sobriety checkpoint. He says she seemed to be having a medical problem but refused to be taken to the emergency room.

Lehman says police then drove Wellham to a friend's house, leaving her car parked near the checkpoint.

He says Wellham called 911 shortly after 4 a.m. to ask where her car was. Her friend told police he last saw her walking toward the highway.
