Families of Brooklyn Homes mass shooting victims to file lawsuits
BALTIMORE -- Families of the victims killed in July's mass shooting in Baltimore's Brooklyn Homes community are now taking the city, a handful of city agencies and the state to court.
On Wednesday, a lawyer representing 21-year-old Kylis Fagbemi and 18-year-old Aaliyah Gonzalez announced a lawsuit, saying what happened back on July 2 was a result of negligence.
Fagbemi and Gonzalez were both shot and killed in Baltimore's largest mass shooting. Police said multiple gunmen opened fire during the annual Brooklyn Day event. Twenty-eight others were injured.
Billy Murphy, the lead attorney representing the Gonzalez and Fagbemi families, said the lawsuits are targeting the State of Maryland, the Baltimore City Police Department, the Housing Authority of Baltimore City, the Mayor's Office of Neighborhood Safety and Engagement, and other agencies.
Police have made arrests since the shooting.
