This year, the theme of Women's History Month is Celebrating Women of Character, Courage, and Commitment. To honor outstanding women both today and throughout history, consider attending some of these exciting events being held in Baltimore this March.

"Girl Rising" is a 2013 documentary film that explores the struggles women face in cultures across the world in cultures that promote practices as arranged marriages and child slavery. The film focuses on nine girls who managed to overcome these injustices through education and have the will to rise above the negative roles their respective cultures assigned to them. On March 3, the acclaimed director of Girl Rising, Richard Robbins, will be presenting this inspiring movie on the campus of The University of Maryland, Baltimore and talking about the path that led to the production of the film.

The Women's Heritage Center has planned an activity-packed day for March 28. Guests will meet at the Women's Heritage Center for a continental breakfast and an overview of the tour. The tour will then take guests to the Jewish Museum of Maryland for dramatization on the immigration and role of Jewish women in early Baltimore, then on to locations where the guests will encounter the experiences of Harriet Tubman on the Underground Railroad, a dramatic presentation of Mother Mary Elizabeth Lange, founder for the first nuns of African descent, and a presentation about Mother Elizabeth Seton, first female saint in the United States. The tour will also stop for a buffet lunch. For the fourth year, Maryland NOW (National Organization for Women) is holding its Women's History Conference, cosponsored and hosted by the Maryland Women's Heritage Center. Taking women's history back to the very beginning in this country, the conference will feature a panel of Native American Women, with representatives of the Baltimore American Indian Center & Museum and members of the Piscataway Indian Nation, including Mervis Savoy. It will also have Susan Carle, author of "Forerunners of the NAACP," discussing the Early Civil Rights Movement.

The Maryland Women's Heritage Center has been a beacon of the history and accomplishments of Maryland women for more than 30 years.
