Ben Carson: President Obama Was 'Raised White, Didn't Grow Up Like Me'

BALTIMORE (WJZ)—In a Tuesday morning podcast with Politico's Glen Thrush, Baltimore neurosurgeon and presidential hopeful Ben Carson said President Barack Obama was 'raised white."

"He's an "African" American. He was, you know, raised white. Many of his formative years were spent in Indonesia. So, for him to, you know, claim that, you know, he identifies with the experience of black Americans, I think, is a bit of a stretch."

Carson tells Thursh he was proud that the color barrier was broken when Obama was elected, but it's night and day compared to his experience.

"You know, I did not. I mean, like most Americans, I was proud that we broke the color barrier when he was elected, but I also recognize that his experience and my experience are night-and-day different," said Carson. "He didn't grow up like I grew up by any stretch of the imagination."

President Obama was born in 1961 in Honolulu, Hawaii, to a white American mother, Stanley Ann Dunham and Kenyan father, Barack Obama Sr. Carson was born in Detroit to two black American parents.
