With the Nationals arriving in Washington in 2005, this is the second chance for a Beltway World Series, with both teams previously making the playoffs in the same year in 2012.

That year, the Orioles earned a Wild Card playoffberth, but failed to advance past the AL Division Series, losing in five games to the New York Yankees.

The Nationals, NL East division champs in 2012, were eliminated by the St. Louis Cardinals in the NLDS in five games.
