Baltimore's Amazon Fulfillment Center Busy For Cyber Monday
BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- After going to brick-and-mortar stores on Black Friday, holiday shoppers are now heading online in search of bargains.
The Monday after Thanksgiving is typically Amazon's busiest day of the year. Last year, they sold 629 items per second. Thirty-three of those were electronics, the site's hottest items.
This year, they are hoping to top that number. WJZ's Tracey Leong reported Monday from the Amazon Fulfillment Center in Baltimore.
She says there are new deals on the site every five minutes. Last year, 54 million items shipped worldwide from Amazon on the "Cyber Monday," which has been called that for the last decade or so by retailers who say it's the biggest online shopping day of the year.
To meet the high demand, the company hired an extra 120,000 employees for the holiday season, and increased its already massive inventory.
"Customers are continuing to shop differently," says Amazon spokeswoman Kelly Cheeseman. "We know customers are utilizing mobile apps now to shop, and so there's actually a way that you can put in items that you're looking for on cyber, if you see them, you can actually press to watch the deal. And that means we'll actually tee it up for you and tell you when it's on special. That way you don't have to be tethered to your phone all day."
Cyber Monday ends on Amazon at midnight.
