Hearing postponed for teen charged with murder in Timothy Reynolds' killing

BALTIMORE -- A judge postponed a preliminary hearing to support whether prosecutors have enough evidence to continue with first-degree murder charges for a 15-year-old squeegee worker accused in a deadly shooting near the Inner Harbor on July 7, according to the teenager's lawyers.

That suspect, who was 14 at the time of the alleged crime, faces eight adult, felony charges that could land him in prison for life for killing Timothy Reynolds at Light and Conway Streets. He is being held without bail while awaiting court proceedings.

"Apparently, the state's attorney's office wants to review the case and determine whether or not it really is a first-degree murder case. And we encourage that so we don't really have any opposition to that," defense attorney J. Wyndal Gordon told WJZ Thursday.

Police said after some sort of altercation, Reynolds parked his car and came toward squeegee window washers with a bat.

The prosecutor said video shows three people surrounding Reynolds. Someone threw a rock at him. She said Reynolds became disoriented and was walking away when he was killed.

WJZ has viewed that video, the only known image of the incident. It was recorded from a car's dashboard camera several vehicle-lengths away from the incident. You can hear multiple gunshots.

The suspect's lawyers claim this is a case of self-defense.

"We're going to absolutely make that move to get this case placed back into juvenile court," Gordon said. "It's our hope that the state's attorney's office will determine that this case does not merit a first-degree murder charge, and the case will automatically be sent back to juvenile court."

WJZ reached out to the Baltimore City State's Attorney's Office for comment. Baltimore City State's Attorney Marilyn Mosby had no comment on the case being postponed and declined to answer further questions.

The suspect is scheduled to be back in court on Aug. 11.

"He's not happy because he is still being held without bail, and it's very unfortunate that we find ourselves in this situation. In this case, this young man was really trying to defend himself and this whole situation turned into a political stunt about the squeegee boys," Gordon said.
