Baltimore Students Hold Climate Strike At Inner Harbor, City Hall

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Some Baltimore area students joined the global Climate Strike movement and walked out of schools Friday.

The strike began around noon.

The march began at the Tri-School (Bryn Mawr, Roland Park Country School, and Gilman) and ended at the Inner Harbor.

The students gathered at city hall Friday for the rally.

"By striking on the 20th, we support a global movement, which demands a green new deal, respect for indigenous land and sovereignty, environmental justice, protection and restoration of biodiversity, and sustainable agriculture," said a Bryn Mawr student leading the effort. "Young people are mobilizing because we must act now to protect our Earth and preserve our futures."

Other area schools are also walking out as a part of the Climate Strike.

Carey Williams said that she is fighting for her kids by protesting.

"We try to re-think things and we try to refuse the use of single-use plastics in our home and that's where it starts for us," Williams said.

NASA says the planet is warming up faster than any time scientists know about from their studies of Earth's entire history. Maria Brown supports the decision of Baltimore's youth to strike.

"This is their planet," Brown said. "They want action and they want it now and we support their understanding of how urgent it is for changes to be made and climate policy to protect children's health."

Baltimore City Public Schools showed support as well. In a statement, they said:

"Our students have important things to add to the nationwide conversation about our roles and responsibilities in this global movement; as educators, one of our primary goals is to teach young people to become engaged citizens who participate actively in our world."
