Police say Banks was the suspect they've been looking for since Tuesday, when he allegedly tried to strike one officer with a silver SUV he was driving and then fire at another officer.

Commissioner Michael Harrison on Tuesday he said that suspect was armed dangerous and police were looking for him.

For the last two days, police had been looking for a suspect they considered armed and dangerous.

Commissioner Harrison said police had a run-in with the driver at a few locations around 11 p.m. Gunfire was exchanged. The suspect was killed, an officer was hit and another bystander was also injured.

Harrison said the crime scene spanned about a block and a half and urged the community to be patient as officers finished processing.

The incident happened at two locations, including the intersection of E. Fayette Street and N. Caroline Street.

Several roads remained closed during morning rush hour Thursday as officers collected evidence from the scene.

Harrison said that the officer was shot in the lower leg and was taken to Shock Trauma in stable condition.

At the intersection of E. Fayette Street and N. Caroline Street, there was an encounter with the subject. The subject got out of a car, and then back into a car, where they drove to a second location.

At that second location, Harrison said that multiple officers fired their weapons at the subject, who he said was armed. The subject was hit and taken to an area hospital where they were pronounced dead.

The Fraternal Order of Police tweeted Thursday morning, that the officer who was shot has since been treated and released.

In part, the tweet said, "he is a hero along with all the officers involved in last nights incident" once again calling Baltimore a city in crisis.

Harrison could not say how many officers were involved or how many shots were fired.

A passerby captured what is believed to be the police-involved shooting.

Baltimore Mayor Bernard C. "Jack" Young said the city is actively going after those causing the violence in the city but police need help from the community.

"We can't do it alone. We need residents to help out," he said. "Police, council, the mayor can't do it alone, but the community that partners with us, we're going to reduce this crime in Baltimore City."

This incident is the second time a Baltimore Police officer was shot in the city this month. Baltimore Police Sergeant Isaac Carrington was shot in early August during an attempted armed robbery outside his home. He was released from the hospital on August 21.
