Baltimore officials break ground on next phase of $1 billion Perkins development project

BALTIMORE -- Old buildings came down in Baltimore's Perkins Homes neighborhood on Wednesday—all to make room for some brand-new ones.

The Perkins, Somerset, Old Town Transformation Project is set to completely reshape the area between Fells Point and Little Italy.

The $1 billion improvement project took a massive step forward.

The goal is to create an inviting neighborhood that promote resident pride and unity among neighbors.

Once it's done, the neighborhood will be full of modern and affordable homes for people who need them.

Mayor Brandon Scott and Baltimore leaders celebrated another groundbreaking as the development project moved into Phase Two.

Mayor Scott got behind the controls of a bulldozer to knock down old buildings and kick start Phase Two of the project.

Once this whole project is finished, there will be two four-story buildings with more than 150 affordable rental units inside.

There will also be four townhome buildings.

The plan is expected to be complete by 2026.
