Baltimore Education Coach Facilitates Care For Students Needs

Dr. Michaele C. Samuel has been working in education for more than 20 years. Previously having worked as a diplomat, Samuel currently works for Prince George's County as a Turnaround Partner.

Samuel holds a Bachelor of Science in psychology and mass communications from Midwestern State University, a Master of Science in clinical psychology from the University of the District of Columbia and a Master of Arts in curriculum and instruction with a concentration in bilingual special education. She earned her Doctorate in Education from George Washington University and also completed school superintendent training in Chicago.

What are the responsibilities of your current role?

"I provide leadership coaching and transformational support to the school leadership team in planning and implementing school turnaround interventions [and] assist school administrators with leveraging research and data to support instruction. I plan and facilitate data driven professional development that creates high performing staff and leadership teams to achieve the school's vision and goals, evaluate education programs for efficacy [and] provide strategic planning and collaborative support in developing and implementing school improvement plans, policies and procedures to improve outcomes for all students."

What is your favorite part about your daily duties?

"I get very excited when I conduct classroom visits and the instructional activities are differentiated to meet the learning needs of the students and students can articulate what they are learning and why they are learning what they are learning."

How has your education/training prepared you for your current role?

"My education training and prior experience undoubtedly prepared me for my current role. In addition, the work I am engaged in is consistent with my personal philosophy on education. Essentially, I believe that a quality education illuminates pathways to serve society. It should provide individuals with greater acumen to access resources and opportunities. The end result should be an improved quality of life and social progress. I am committed to ensuring that all students are provided with the tools and resources to achieve their maximum potential."

What do you do to continue your education/training?

"I continue my education and training by taking courses, reading current research and scholarly articles, attending and presenting at conferences."

Do you have any advice for others looking to enter this field?

"Working in education is challenging but very rewarding work in terms of having a positive impact on the lives of children and youth. When selecting coursework and practical training opportunities, think about the diversity (socio-economic, cultural, linguistic, ethnicity, race, special needs) of the student population and equip yourself with the skills and tools to meet the needs of all students."
