Officials: Person Rescued After Falling Into 10-Foot Deep Trench In Baltimore County
LUTHERVILLE-TIMONIUM, Md. (WJZ) -- A man was rescued from a 10-foot-deep trench in Baltimore County Friday evening, officials said.
The situation happened around 4:15 p.m. in the 1800 block of Pot Spring Road in Lutherville-Timonium, the Baltimore County Fire Department said.
"One of the workers was taking out the trash and as he stepped out the door he fell in the hole in the trench," said Fire Specialist Nicholas Tyson with the Baltimore County Fire Department.
Firefighters said there was a pre-existing construction site behind the building, including the four-foot-wide and 10-foot-deep trench.
Officials said a coworker helping the man clean an office building found him trapped and called for help.
"We classify this as an advanced tactical rescue so we call out our advanced tactical team (since the) victim reportedly suffered a broken leg," Tyson said.
Rescue crews, firefighters the Maryland Operation Safety and Health department and BGE all responded to the scene to free the victim and cut off gas and electricity to the building.
Some rain in the area at the time posed an additional challenge.
"We had to shore up the trench so that it doesn't collapse on the patient," Tyson said.
After two hours, the victim was freed and taken to an area hospital. He is expected to be okay.
