Baltimore City Police Monitoring Religious Institutions After Synagogue Shooting In San Diego

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Following a shooting at the Chabad of Poway synagogue in San Diego Saturday morning, Baltimore City Police officers have been ordered to pay, "special attention" to all religious institutions in their district.

Baltimore City Police released a statement, saying:

"In light of the shooting that occurred in San Diego, all Baltimore City Patrol officers have been ordered to pay special attention to all religious institutions and places of worship in their district."

Howard Libit of the Baltimore Jewish Council said there has been, "a lot of support from federal, state and local officials."

"We've been fortunate to have a lot of support from our federal, state and local officials to ensure we have security," Libit said. "We help them do evaluations, we tap into state and federal funds, and all of them have really been working hard to enhance cameras, enhance tougher doors, actual armed and unarmed guards, and to ensure we're as safe as possible while still being welcoming in a place of worship."

The shooting at the Chabad of Poway synagogue killed one person and sent three other people to the hospital.

The incident comes on the sixth month anniversary of the shooting at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh that claimed the lives of 11 people.

Libit said that Saturday's shooting was, "horrifying."

"To occur on the sixth month anniversary of the shootings in Pittsburgh, to see yet another attack on a place of worship... places of worship should be a safe place for all, and shouldn't be subject to these kinds of hateful attacks," Libit said.

Gov. Larry Hogan and other Maryland lawmakers took to Twitter following the shooting.
