Woman Dead After Car Goes Into Water At Fells Point

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- A woman is dead after the car she was in went into the water early Sunday morning in Fells Point.

Police responded to the 900 block of Bond Street around 4:44 a.m. for reports of a vehicle in the water.

"The fact that someone can get that far from the street to the water, I mean that's crazy," said area resident Brian Davis.

When officers arrived, they were told that a vehicle had been driven into the water and that the driver had not emerged.

The Marine Unit of Baltimore City Police, Baltimore City Fire Department, divers and homicide detectives were then called to the scene.

A woman was recovered from the water and transported to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

"Of course, it's so close to my business, people were so concerned what I knew," said business owner Beth Hawks.

Hawks said she saw the tow truck bringing the car past her store and said it was devastating.

Some people pointed out that this is a busy stretch of Fells with foot traffic- especially on a weekend.

And while the public doesn't know the identity of the woman inside the car- people who heard about the tragedy said they're keeping her family in their thoughts.

"I had to come say a prayer for her today, that's why I walked down here," Hawks said.

As of right now, investigators are trying to determine what caused the woman to drive into the water.

Anyone with information is asked to contact homicide detectives at 410-396-2100.
