Baltimore Care Coordinator Strives To Preserve Familes

Maryland Choices is a nonprofit care management entity (CME) serving the entire state of Maryland which is, according to its website, funded by multiple governmental agencies. Its primary purpose is to address the needs of at risk youth through multiple wraparound services in order to maintain, wherever possible, the integrity of the
family unit.

Jocelyn McKinley is a care coordinator with Maryland Choices; which is an operating unit within the State of Maryland. Her job is to develop and execute a comprehensive plan of care for each client; including making regular home visits, monitoring that services are being provided and ensuring that goals are being met. She has a B.A. from McDaniel College in Sociology.

What inspired you to enter sociology?

"I was inspired to enter the field of children's mental and behavioral health when I was in the 10th grade. In the boarding high school I attended, we had to participate in an internship every Wednesday. I chose to work at Easter Seals Daycare in Washington D.C. This was my first interaction with children who have mental differences. From there, I developed a passion for the mind, varying behaviors, and different social groups."

How does your educational background relate to your current role?

"While in college, I studied sociology and psychology, so it directly relates when I am looking at and assessing behaviors across different living environments."

How has your education helped to further your career and contribute to your success?

"Careers involving children are usually very specific; so having the skill set from the studies I completed gives me a greater insight into this field; and mixing my psychology studies with sociology allows me to meet each individual where they are and connect on their level."

What is some advice you can offer others looking to go into sociology?

"Just love what you do and never stop learning. Mental health is an ever evolving field; and it is crucial to stay on top of the changes."
