Md. Mother Arrested After 8-Month-Old Ingests Drugs
PASADENA, Md. (WJZ) -- Police have arrested a 19-year-old woman after her 8-month-old reportedly ingested drugs, and naloxone had to be used to revive the child.
A seemingly quiet neighborhood in Pasadena has been rocked to its core.
"To hear something like that across the street is a big shock," said neighbor James Revere of the arrest of Jordan Marie Holt.
Anne Arundel County Police took the young mother into custody after they say her infant likely overdosed on Fentanyl and Methadone.
Authority say the incident unfolded on March 20 at a home in the 2900 block of E. Almondbury Drive.
Police say first responders who were under the impression that the child had ingested a heroin capsule had to act fast.
"EMT's rather immediately administered Naloxone, Narcan in an effort to revive the child. The fire department then transported the child ultimately to a children's hospital where Narcan had to be administered a second time," said police spokesman Marc Limansky.
The child survived after the near brush with death.
The situation led police to launch an investigation at the home that confirmed suspicions of drugs, specifically opioids.
"Certainly this individual had these items within reach of the child in the residence. It's very unusual that we had an eight-month-old having Narcan administered like that, but thankfully it had a positive effect," Limansky said.
Most neighbors were reluctant to speak about the case, but one man did say it's not the first time he saw police activity at the home in question.
"What goes on behind doors… It's a real shock we never really truly know," said Revere.
According to charging documents obtained by the Capital Gazette, Holt denied using any heroin but admitted to abusing prescription opioids.
The documents collected by the Gazette go on to show that Holt claimed any heroin belongs to her roommate who in turn also denied the drug use.
Holt has been charged with first- and second-degree child abuse, reckless endangerment, child neglect, possession of fentanyl and methadone, as well as multiple drug paraphernalia charges.
A preliminary hearing is set for later this month.
