Around The MLB With Jason Catania
Jason Catania of Bleacher Report joined the Scott Garceau Show with Jeremy Conn to take his weekly trip around the MLB with the guys. Orioles Catcher Matt Wieters joined the Bowie Baysox to begin his rehab assignment, Jason gave his thoughts on what the all-star catcher can bring to Baltimore. "Wieters is an interesting guy. He was counted as a potential MVP candidate 5 or 6 years ago. He's been a good offensive player, but not a great one. He's had some struggles at the plate. They wouldn't be able to trade him because they'd have to sell low, but whether he can catch 50% of the time will make the difference."
Orioles relief pitcher Brian Matusz was suspended saturday night for having a foreign substance on his right forearm. Jason gave his thoughts on if pine tar could be legalized to help pitchers get a better grip on the ball. "Everybody is going it. Former pitchers, current pitchers, coaches, managers all acknowledge it. John Farrell, the Red Sox manager, as a former pitcher himself, doesn't mind seeing some sort of approved substance. Maybe even have umpires telling the pitches, too much, or, too little. It should be regulated.
The MLB Trade Deadline is drawing near and it will effect which prospects could be called up later this season. Jason gave one name to look out for. "We're now getting into late May, and right around early June is when we see that deadline becoming a factor. I think at some point in the next two or three weeks we'll see Carlos Carrasco from the Astros, especially since they're playing so well. He could be a huge impact player. He's only 20 years old, but he's been tearing though AA and he's making his way through AAA now."
