Annapolis Restaurant Week Spans The Globe
ANNAPOLIS, Md. (WJZ) -- The first Restaurant Week happened 22 years ago in New York City coinciding with the Republican National Convention. Since then it spread across the world, including to Annapolis.
Mike Schuh reports.
Annapolis is everything you think it is: the capital, touristy and quaint.
It's more than just crab cakes, though.
Monday begins Restaurant Week in Annapolis.
"This is a great opportunity for people to come out and visit, or locals -- if they're in Annapolis -- to come out and try some of the restaurants they may not have had," said Anthony Clarke, Galway Bay.
February is traditionally a slow month for restaurants, but special fixed prices attract a new crowd the restaurants hope to keep.
"If we can gain them as a customer, and do a good job with them on Restaurant Week, then they'll think about us when they come back here. So it's about 50 percent," said Clarke.
At Galway Bay, it's fish and chips, corned beef, shepherd's pie, but there are enough places involved in Annapolis to span the globe.
"We have phenomenal crab cakes, but we also have Thai, Irish, Italian, Mediterranean and so on, and they're all excellent quality and it's an opportunity to showcase," said Connie Del Signore, Annapolis Visitors Bureau.
Restaurant Week is a week long, but in the past some have made it a weekend, arriving on Friday and checking out on Sunday.
It's proved such a success that the numbers have doubled.
"It's grown from just under 20 restaurants six years ago to now over 41 participating," Clarke said.
The prices this week are $13, $16 and $33. Restaurant Week runs through Sunday night.
