Annapolis Man, 41, Charged After 2 Children Shot, Police Say

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (WJZ) --A 41-year-old Annapolis man faces a list of charges in a shooting over the weekend that sent two children to the hospital, authorities said.

John Estep is charged with first-degree assault, dangerous weapon with intent to injure and reckless endangerment, among other offenses, Annapolis Police said.

The charges stem from a shooting Saturday night that injured a 14-year-old boy and 10-year-old girl. Both were taken to a hospital for treatment.

Officers were called to Estep's Obery Court home about 6 p.m. in response to a complaint about teens banging on his door. They were gone when police arrived.

About 7:12 p.m., someone reported that a group of teens was kicking a neighbor's door. Several minutes later, there was a report of gunfire in the area.

When officers returned, Estep told them someone kicked in his door and entered his home, police said.

Estep told police he opened fire at the intruder, then shot at a group through a window before walking outside and firing a round into the ground, police said.

A 14-year-old boy was shot twice in the lower extremities and a 10-year-old girl was shot in the back.

The children were taken to an area hospital. The boy has since been released, but the girl remains hospitalized in stable condition, police said.

During their investigation, police found Estep's door damaged and 25 spent shell casings inside his home and another was found on his porch.

Police said another shell casing was found outside the home, but it's unclear whether that casing is related to Saturday evening's shooting.

Estep, who turned himself in, was later released on his own recognizance.

The incident remains under investigation, and police are asking anyone with information about it to call detectives at 410-260-3439.
