Amazon Plans To Open Facility In Cecil County

NORTH EAST, Md. (WJZ) — Online retail giant Amazon has chosen Cecil County for a new 1.2 million square foot distribution center.

The new facility could be a big boost to the county's economy.

The $90 million distribution center's footprint is bigger than 20 football fields.

"It shows that Cecil County should be taken seriously as a great place to do business for anyone," says Chris Moyer, with the Cecil County Office of Development.

The project has already brought in about $450,000 in permit fees and will bring in about $6 million in property taxes over the next 10 years.

Another bonus? For local consumers, Amazon Prime orders could be filled within hours instead of days.

And, the facility is expected to create 700 full time jobs.

"Most citizens are extremely excited about having such a large retailer come to Cecil County, such a large employer bringing great jobs," Moyer says.

Residents WJZ spoke with Wednesday were optimistic.

"We have a lot of jobs going away and we can use the jobs," one man said.

"I moved here five months ago and I just got a job now," a woman said. "So there aren't many jobs locally so it would be great."

The new center is expected to open this spring.
