Amazon Gets $100K Loan From Baltimore For Mass Transit Help

BALTIMORE (AP) -- Baltimore officials have approved a $100,000 forgivable loan for Amazon to help cover expenses associated with providing transportation for its employees to fill gaps in the state's mass transit system.

The Daily Record of Baltimore reports that the city approved the loan to assist Amazon with bringing its approximately 3,500 employees to and from its massive fulfillment center in east Baltimore's Chesapeake Commerce Center, where officials say mass transportation options are lacking.

Amazon covers some of the cost of running shuttles to supplement current MTA service, which provides city residents without cars access to jobs at the fulfillment center.

If Amazon maintains at least 1,600 full-time jobs at the fulfillment center through Dec. 31, 2018, the loan will be converted to a grant.
