After $5M Renovation, Baltimore's Washington Monument Reopens
BALTIMORE (WJZ)--This is a big weekend in Mount Vernon. 200 years ago construction began there to build the first monument to our first president.
Now as Mike Schuh reports, a $5 million renovation has been completed.
Look up. It's bright, tight and right, and it's ready for you.
"Saturday July 4th we'll be celebrating the monumental bicentennial," said Adrianne Carroll, Mt. Vernon Conservancy.
200-years-ago this limestone pedestal rose into the sky. Time took its toll, but millions later, the stone solid.
Repairs have been made inside and out. Everything George gazes upon has been renovated, repaired and ready to go. And inside, a digital interface
"They'll now be able to learn about the history of the monument. We'll be live streaming from the top so they'll be able to see what's happening there and be able to climb the steps to the top where the view is remarkable," Carroll says.
So you can't be at the monument with out taking the trip up.
The Monument's old steps have been smoothed out and even on this cool day.... it's hot. The walls have been tuckpointed, and there is new even lighting.
It's actually about 220 some odd steps, but you're going to break a sweat. But once you get up here, it's totally worth it.
Now a whole new generation can enjoy this right of passage.
"You know I think it really shines a light on the good things that are happening in Baltimore," said Tracey Baskerville, BOPA.
And the neighborhood is ready to celebrate, wanting you to come inside to see the fresh face of the building honoring the man who is, for many, the face of America.
That celebration begins at 8:30 in the morning on Saturday and runs till 5:00 p.m.
