A New Look at the U.S. Capitol Building

BALTIMORE (WJZ)-- A new look at the the Capitol Building in D.C. as the scaffolding is removed after three long years.

From elected U.S. officials to immigrants who now call the U.S. home, the building means freedom and hope. It's a major piece of American history that has been covered for years.

"The last time I was here the scaffolding was up, so the Capitol Building looks so much more beautiful now," said Kevin Tracy from Spartanburg, South Carolina.

Tracy like many people are happy to see the dome of the Capitol Building unveiled, once again, showcasing all its glory.

"I think of all the history that's occurred here after 225 years. The aspirations of the Americans that came here as immigrants like myself," said Tracey.

The dome of the 216 year old building underwent major repair beginning in 2014, after 1300 cracks were found. Now the dome shines again, the home of where laws of the land are decided.

Maryland congressman Dutch Ruppersberger, works at the building and expressed his thoughts once he saw the scaffolding removed.

"The first thought is when I have constituents or family who come and want to get their picture taken, and they're going to see the real dome and not scaffolding. But more importantly it is something special and it always will be because what it represents, we are the best country in the world and the dome represents the United States of America," said Rupperberger.

If you like the outside,  a look inside shows how artwork covers the ceiling surrounded by intricate detailing. It's a beauty that now reflects the outside.

"I think it's absolutely beautiful, I'm glad we got to come here when the scaffolding wasn't up there, because it kind of took away from the beauty of it," said Nikoki Stevens from Buckley, Washington.

"To me, I think it just shows the beauty when you look at it," said Bella Stevens, from Buckley, Washington.

During the Dome Restoration Project, construction stayed within its nearly $60 million budget.
