A Habit-Forming Good Time: 'Sister Act' Hits The Hippodrome Stage
BALTIMORE (WJZ)—On the silver screen, it was a mega hit. On Broadway, it received several Tony nominations. Now, "Sister Act" hits the Hippodrome stage on its national tour.
Gigi Barnett reports it's a habit-forming good time.
A disco diva on the run from the mob finds refuge in a convent. In return, she transforms the nuns into a singing sensation.
It's the story of "Sister Act."
Most folks know it from the 1992 silver screen hit.
But lead actors, Ta-Rea Campbell and Hollis Resnik say come expecting something different.
"We are doing this script, which was written for the stage, which was a little different," Campbell said.
Instead of Vegas, the musical takes place in Philadelphia, Campbell's hometown.
"The show starts out with me saying, 'Hello, Philadelphia' because I'm performing for a club. So, when the tour was in Philadelphia, that was a really special moment for me," Campbell said.
Campbell plays the "wise-cracking" Deloris Van Cartier, whose musical style challenges tradition and the uptight Mother Superior, played by Resnick.
Resnick says her character finds some saving grace of her own.
"This volcano of energy comes into her convent and disrupts her world. Disrupts the whole convent, much to her dismay. And that's her journey," Resnick said.
Also part of the journey on stage: it is set in the '70s.
"The music is all disco. Bee Gees, Otis Redding, Donna Summers. It'll take you back," Resnick said.
After two years on the road, "Sister Act" ends its national tour this season, so this may be your last chance to see the musical in Baltimore.
"Sister Act" will be at the Hippodrome until June 15.
