90-Year-Old Baltimore Woman Critical After Home Invasion

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Police are investigating after a 90-year-old woman was nearly beaten to death during a home invasion in Northwest Baltimore. It happened in broad daylight along the 4500 block of Garden Drive.

"It's tough to find words to describe what officers found when they entered home," police told WJZ's Rick Ritter. "We have a 90-year-old woman who was brutally assaulted, and by all accounts, left for dead inside her home."

At around noon on Wednesday, police got a call from concerned citizen Randolph Alston, who was worried about his 90-year-old neighbor.

When they arrived on-scene, officers found the back door wide open and the elderly woman tied up on the floor inside with bruises all over her body.

"When I opened the door and called her name, she didn't say anything," said Alston. "I walked in the dining room, she was there, she was laying on the floor. I couldn't tell she was tied, thought she might have fallen and hurt herself."

The 90-year-old woman is currently listed in critical but stable condition. Police are unsure exactly how long she was left waiting for help.

"One of the cops said, 'Good thing you came to check on her, because she would have been dead if you didn't,'" said Alston.

Police say someone busted in the elderly woman's home, assaulted her and then took off. It's not clear what they were after or if anything was even stolen.

"I'm ready to move. That's what goes through my mind. That's terrible," said neighbor Lavonne Speaks.

Police are checking on surveillance video in the area, trying to get any leads on potential suspects.

Anyone with information is urged to call Metro Crime Stoppers at 1-866-7Lockup.
