7-year-old girl shot inside Mondawmin Mall expected to survive, upgraded to stable

BALTIMORE-- A 7-year-old girl who was shot as an unintended target over the weekend inside Mondawmin Mall is expected to survive.

The girl, who was shot twice while shopping with her mother, has been upgraded to stable, according to our media partners at The Baltimore Banner.

The child was shot during an altercation between two groups on the first floor of the mall, according to police.

An unidentified male fired shots as he was running away, striking the girl, police say.

"We are now talking about a young person that is fighting for their life because someone decided to pull out a gun because they don't know how to resolve their conflict," Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott said.

No arrests have been made.

"One coward pulls a weapon and shoots indiscriminately back toward the crowd striking the young lady, and then of course as usual flees the area, but I can tell you we will catch him," Baltimore Police Commissioner Richard Worley said.

"It takes a coward to resort to gun violence to resolve some petty beef," Scott added. "But it takes a special kind of coward to indiscriminately shoot into a crowd."

People who were at the mall were appalled to hear that a young child was caught in the crossfire.

"It's time that it stops," said Keenan Gainous. "Enough is enough."

Authorities indicated there may be footage of the shooter. 

Worley and Scott believe the shooter will be found soon and be held accountable.

"We will find you, turn yourself in, grow a set," Scott said. "Come turn yourself in and stand up and stand tall for what you've done because we're going to find you anyway."
