35 Arrested In Baltimore After First Night Of Curfew
BALTIMORE (WJZ)-- The city is waking up after the first night of curfew following Monday's night of unrest.
Mike Schuh on the struggle police had last night getting people to leave the streets.
The curfew ends at 5 a.m.,but it wasn't easy getting some residents to return to their homes overnight.
Several people were arrested as officers here were forced to use tear gas to disperse the crowds.
As night fell on Baltimore City, thousands of police and National Guard troops spread out.
Shortly after 10:00 p.m. Tuesday, they send clear warnings to crowds on the street in west Baltimore. A 10:00 p.m. nightly curfew is now in effect.
After a short standoff, police to fire smoke bombs into the crowd-- clearing the streets.
City Police Commissioner Anthony Batts applauded his officers for successfully securing the area.
WJZ crews reported several instances of crowds throwing bottles and other objects at lines of officers on North Avenue.
The area was at the heart of the riots earlier this week and officers say they want to make sure it stays secure.
Commissioner Batts say at least 7 people were arrested last night for violating the curfew. There were also several other arrests for various charges.
The curfew will remain in effect through the weekend.
