5 People Shot In Downtown Baltimore Monday Morning After Violent Easter Weekend
BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- At least 10 people were shot in Baltimore City between Good Friday and Monday morning. In one of the most recent incidents, five people were shot on Eutaw Street early Monday morning.
According to police, that shooting happened some time around 1 a.m. Baltimore City police say the victims who were shot were all men between 37 and 61 years old.
A lady in the area of the 300 block of Eutaw street said she's lost hope in the city where she was born and raised.
"I really want to leave but I don't have the money to leave. Because it's so much crime in Baltimore," the woman said.
The Easter Weekend was a violent one. Saturday afternoon, City police say a 31-year-old died after he was shot near Furrow Street in the Southwest District.
On Easter Sunday, another man died after he was shot on Pennsylvania Avenue.
Several other victims were also shot at various locations in the City, but they are expected to survive.
Before the weekend, a 41-year-old man was killed on North Conkling Street on Friday.
Police say three young people carjacked him and in the process, the man was hit by his own vehicle. Police say they arrested a 16-year-old driver.
"This man lost his life on good Friday that's pretty sad to me. Things need to change man. Things need to change around here," says Michael Sansone who lives in the area.
Homicides are up slightly this year. According to data from Baltimore City Police, as of Monday morning, there were 75 murders compared to 72 the same time last year.
In a statement Saturday afternoon regarding the carjacking, Mayor Brandon Scott said "My heart goes out to the families impacted by this violence. I am thankful for the work of our Baltimore Police Department in immediately apprehending a suspect."
In another interview over the weekend, the mayor also said, "We need to be actually rehabilitaing people, especially our young people when they are going through the system so that we are not seeing the same people over and over again."
By Monday afternoon, Baltimore City Police reported that two more people were killed in the city. One person was shot on Edgecombe Circle and another person was shot on North Broadway.
