5 People Injured In Fells Point Shooting Early Saturday, Police Say

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Baltimore City Police are investigating after an overnight shooting in Fells Point left five people injured.

Police were called to the 700 block of South Broadway Street around 1:15 a.m. Saturday for a report of a shooting.

When officers arrived, they found two 28-year-old women and a 27-year-old woman suffering from gunshot wounds.

The victims were taken to area hospitals with what are believed to be non-life-threatening injures.

A short time later, police were called to an area hospital where two more people; a 28-year-old man and a 21-year old man, were suffering from gunshot wounds.

Investigators believe the victims were also injured in the same shooting.

Councilman Zeke Cohen was in the are at the time of the shooting. He wrote on Facebook:

"I was close to where the shots went off. We are still in a global pandemic. Large crowds are a major problem. For weeks we've been saying this would happen with crowds gathering drinking and driving. This cannot continue. We need the Mayor to directly intervene. I'm shaken up but OK."

A local bar manager said more people have been out lately, as some coronavirus restrictions have been lifted.

"There are just tons of people streaming out into the square that are there until four in the morning for who knows what reason," Ashley Pridgen, Assistant Bar Manager at Lil' Phil's in Fells Point, said.

Mayor Jack Young said Saturday he's concerned with residents failing to heed warnings about gathering in large crowds. He urged them to continue to practice social distancing.

'Frustrated And Concerned' | Mayor Young, City Leaders Urge Baltimore Residents To Follow Social Distancing Guidelines, Avoid Large Crowds

Mayor Young issued the following statement in a press release:

"I am frustrated and concerned by residents failing to heed our continued warnings about the need to practice social distancing and avoid large gatherings in order to keep reducing the spread of COVID-19. The gatherings we are seeing – with people in close contact, with crowds of people in small spaces – could increase the spread of COVID-19. We have seen tremendous progress on bending the curve, and to see people engaging in risky behaviors at this point is incredibly disappointing – it has to stop."

The square in Fells Point closed at 11 p.m. Saturday due to the recent incident.

Baltimore Police said they added more officers to the area. Anyone with information is urged to contact Baltimore City Police or Metro Crime Stoppers.
