4 Families Displaced After 2-Alarm Highlandtown Fire

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- We're following breaking news in Highlandtown, where a fire has broken out---with reports of people trapped. Those people have been rescued.

Rick Ritter has more.

The call came around 10:30 for a two-story building fire at the 35-hundred block of Lombard Street. When firefighters arrived, they found the building engulfed in flames.

Four families were home when the fire began in four different apartments. All were able to get out.

A man said his neighbor was messing around with a blowtorch trying to melt things. That's when the fire quickly erupted and flames spread through the four apartments. The man ran out and knocked on all the doors, trying to get everyone out, which he did. No one was injured.

"The lady told me, `Get out the building; get everybody out; don't go back in there and help him and get out the building altogether," said one man.

The man said he got everyone out safely.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
