3-Year-Old Boy Dies After He Was Shot In Bowie

BOWIE, Md. (WJZ) -- A 3-year-old boy is dead after he was shot inside an apartment in Bowie on Monday evening.

"It is with heavy hearts that we inform our community that the three-year-old victim in this incident has passed," Bowie Police tweeted Wednesday morning.

This happened at an apartment complex in Bowie right off of Route 301. Homicide detectives are leading the investigation and trying to determine if the shooting was possibly accidental.

"It's every parent's worst nightmare," Bowie Police Chief John Nesky said.

Bowie Police officers were called for an incident of trouble at the Governor's Green Apartment complex on Governor Bridge Road just after 6 p.m. Monday.

"We met the complainant in an apartment and found a 3-year-old male child suffering from a gunshot wound," Nesky said.

The toddler was taken to a hospital in critical condition, police said.

Detectives now are working to figure out exactly what led to the shooting and who pulled the trigger.

"Pieces are still being put together. The investigators are working tirelessly to determine the factors or cause of the incident," Nesky said.

At this time, police said there is no ongoing threat to the community. No arrests have been made yet in this case.

Bowie Police responded to an "unknown trouble" call around 5:45 p.m. in the 16400 block of Governors Bridge Road, Prince George's County Police said.

There, they found a 3-year-old boy was suffering from a gunshot wound. He was rushed to an area hospital but later died.

A preliminary investigation revealed the child and a parent were visiting someone at the apartment. There were other adults there at the time. Shortly after they arrived, the child was shot.

Detectives are trying to determine whether this was an accidental shooting.

So far, no arrests have been made.
