2-year-old killed in Washington County apartment fire

BALTIMORE - A 2-year-old died in a two-alarm apartment fire Friday evening in Washington County, the Maryland State Fire Marshal said.

A 1-year-old and a 24-year-old woman were also hospitalized by the fire. Their condition is unknown.

About 75 firefighters responded to "fast-moving" fire in the home in the 20600 block of Military Road in Cascade.

Upon entering the home which had been converted into apartments, firefighters located the woman and the 1-year-old. Other tenants said another child was still inside.

The 2-year-old was found inside the second-floor apartment.

Eight other tenants were displaced.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

"My heart aches after learning of another devastating fire, and every member of the Office of the State Fire Marshal extend our deepest condolences to the family," said acting State Fire Marshal Jason Mowbray.
