Off-Duty Officer, Retired Corrections Officer Fatally Shoot Allegedly Armed Suspect Who Tried Rob Them, Police Say
BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Just after 11 p.m. Saturday night, Baltimore City Police said a man tried to rob two people near East 23rd Street and Guilford Avenue.
But police said the two people, a Baltimore School Police officer and a retired Department of Corrections officer had their own concealed weapons, pulled out their guns and shot the alleged robber multiple times.
The suspect later died.
People on the block heard the commotion.
"When I heard the shots, I was like is my daughter in the house?" said a block resident.
"To do something so blatantly like that, you have to know the consequences behind the action." Another added.
As the investigation continues, the head of Baltimore Schools Police Union said the school police officer is a combat vet who is now dealing with this traumatic experience.
"Baltimore City School Police are not losing sight that a life was lost, but we hope in the future, other people will make better decisions and not try to rob people who are trying to enjoy a night in Baltimore City." said Sgt. Clyde Boatwright.
Just last month, the Baltimore City Police Department deputy commissioner and his wife were robbed near Patterson Park.
There was also video where another police department employee was beaten and robbed.
As city leaders try to cut the crime in Baltimore, they are asking the governor's help with more resources like technology that could cut the crime.
"We are looking forward to working with the Governor and his team to make sure that we get the funding that we need to reduce crime in the city," said Baltimore Mayor Jack Young.
Police have not identified the person who died after Saturday night's reported robbery.
