1 Dead In Downtown Hagerstown Fire

HAGERSTOWN, Md. (AP) -- A Hagerstown city spokeswoman says the state medical examiner's office is working to identify a person who died in a downtown apartment building fire.

Spokeswoman Erin Wolfe said Friday that the victim's remains were found in a building on East Franklin Street near the city center.

Fire Marshal Doug DeHaven told The Herald-Mail investigators believe the fire Thursday night was accidental and foul play is not suspected.

The fire was reported shortly before 8 p.m.

DeHaven says buildings on either side of the damaged structure were evacuated.
