World's largest tomato fight
The streets of the eastern Spanish town of Bunol, near Valencia, are awash once again with red pulp as thousands of people pelt each other with tomatoes in the annual La Tomatina battle. Tens of thousands of festival-goers, including many tourists, hurled 170 tonnes of over-ripe tomatoes at each other to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the massive food fight in the small village of Bunol in eastern Spain.
The origin of the tomato fight is disputed but most agree it started around 1940, in the early years of General Francisco Franco’s dictatorship.
