Aslan's body was found beaten, stabbed, and burned after being dumped in a riverbed. Her body was discovered Feb. 13, 2015. Three suspects have been detained for her death.

The protest initially started on twitter with Turkish women tweeting the hashtag #sendeanlat – translated roughly as 'wear a miniskirt for Ozegan'
Neighboring Azerbaijan men responded by tweeting photos of themselves wearing skirts under the hashtag #ozgecanicinminietekgiy last week.

Turkey's president described violence against women Feb 16, 2015 as the "bleeding wound" of the country after a woman was stabbed and beaten to death after trying to fight off a man trying to rape her. Despite a surge in violence against women in Turkey last year, the particularly brutal, and public, attack on Ozgecan Aslan, 20, has become a rallying point, prompting protests and condemnation by politicians.
