Supermoon rising

Skywatchers in some parts of the globe got to see a rare combination of three unusual events -- a blue moon (the second full moon of the month), a supermoon and a total lunar eclipse.

The first full moon of 2018 rises behind festive seasonal lights on display on January 1, 2018 in Wells, Somerset, England. This full moon was also a supermoon, meaning that it coincided with the moon's closest approach to Earth, known as the perigee. January 2018 will see a second supermoon as well as a lunar eclipse on 31st of the month.

The supermoon takes on a striking red tone as it rises on December 3, 2017 in Washington, D.C. This was the only supermoon of 2017. It was also the first in an unusual string of three consecutive supermoons, with the next two coming on Jan. 1 and Jan. 31, 2018.
