The European Union is experiencing a steep rise in the number of Kosovo citizens smuggling themselves into the affluent bloc, with 10,000 filing for asylum in Hungary in just one month this year compared to 6,000 for all of 2013. It follows a relaxation of travel rules allowing Kosovars to reach EU borders via Serbia and has coincided with political turmoil and street unrest in Kosovo fueled by poverty, high unemployment and economically debilitating corruption.

Stephen Hicks, who had posted anti-religious messages on Facebook and quarreled with neighbors, was charged with killing three young Muslims in what police said was a dispute over parking and possibly a hate crime.
The victims were newlyweds Deah Shaddy Barakat, 23, a University of North Carolina dental student, and his wife, Yusor Mohammad, 21, and Yusor's sister, Razan Mohammad Abu-Salha, 19.

Thai officials raided the Buddhist temple that is home to more than 100 tigers and are conducting an investigation into suspected links to wildlife trafficking. Authorities from Thailand's Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation checked 143 Bengal tigers living at the temple and found them to be in good health.

The ski guide and two clients entered onto the face and triggered the slide which ran the entire length of the 1,500-meter face to the valley below. The Kashmiri ski guide was killed while the two clients managed to escape the avalanche. The resulting crown measured four meters above the bed surface.

Three people were injured in the explosion at the chemical plant in northern Spain, and authorities advised residents of several small towns near Barcelona to stay indoors as the large toxic cloud spread over the area. Catalan authorities told people to shut their windows and stay inside as a precaution, and they cut off some roads in the area as well as a train line.
France

Strauss-Kahn is charged with "procuring with aggravating circumstances." The trial is expected to run for at least three weeks, court officials said.

Scientists are struggling to figure out what is causing hundreds of sick and starving California sea lions to wash up on on California shores over the past three winters. Nearly 500 of the extremely emaciated pups have been found since the beginning of the year and are being treated at rehabilitation centers throughout the state. The Marine Mammal center has cared for over 170 of the pups so far this year.
