Photos From "Bible Road"

This is one of the photos Sam Fentress took for his book "Bible Road." Fentress, who received his M.F.A. from the Art Institute of Chicago, traveled across 49 states searching for religious signs.

Fentress took thousands of pictures for this project. This photo was taken in San Diego in 1995. The artist urges people not to be controlled by alcohol and to "ask Jesus and He will free you."

This photo, taken in Monroe, Ohio, in 1992, is simply of a verse from the Bible. John 3:3 states: "Jesus answered and said unto him: Verily, verily, I say unto thee, except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God."

These photos, taken in Pittsburg, Kan., in 1997, depict the words of the "Hail Mary" like an old Burma Shave advertisement.

Fentress took this photo in New York City's Harlem, in 1990.

This sign, which is officially supposed to alert drivers of pedestrians crossing the street, took on a new meaning when someone added a cross to the figure's back. Fentress captured it in Portland, Ore., in 1998.
