The fictional heavy metal band Spinal Tap (played Michael McKean, Harry Shearer, and Christopher Guest) was featured in the 1984 rock musical mocumentary directed by Rob Reiner. Reiner also appeared in the film and wrote some of the music.

In 2002, the film was deemed "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant" by the Library of Congress and was selected for preservation in the National Film Registry.
