Local lushes: America's 13 drunkest cities
Whether it's a big celebration like New Years Eve and St. Paddy's or just a night out with friends, lots of Americans like to drink. But some cities are notorious for having more drinkers - regardless of whether there's something to celebrate. For its second annual list of the "drunkest" cities in the U.S., The Daily Beast used data from leading research firm Experian Simmons and the CDC to look at more than 200 cities and get to the bottom of which one was booziest.
What makes a city drunker than others? The Daily Beast took into account the amount people said they drank per month and the percentage of the population that are binge drinkers. 13. Denver
Kicking off the list of America's 13 "drunkest" cities is Denver, with an average of 15.3 drinks consumed per person each month. In the city, 16.8 percent of the population are binge drinkers.
12. Charleston, S.C.
In Charleston, an average of 13.8 drinks are consumed per person each month. And 17.3 percent of the population are binge drinkers.
11. Burlington, Vt.
Almost one in five - 19.4 percent - of Burlington's population are binge drinkers. Each month, a person consumes an average of 13.5 drinks.
10. Tucson, Ariz.
Each month in Tucson, a person consumes an average of 14.2 drinks. Of the city's population, 16.8 percent are binge drinkers.
9. San Diego
Sunny San Diego's population consists in part - 17.7 percent, to be exact - of binge drinkers. Each month, an average of 14.1 drinks are consumed per person.
8. St. Louis
In St. Louis, an average of 14.4 drinks are consumed per person each month. Eighteen percent of the city's population are binge drinkers.
7. Austin, Texas
In the city of Austin, Texas, 18.4 percent of the population are binge drinkers. Each month, a person consumes an average of 15.5 drinks.
6. Chicago
The Windy City is home to a population of people who consume an average of 15.5 drinks each month. Just over 17 percent of the population are binge drinkers.
5. San Antonio
In San Antonio, 19.4 percent of the population are binge drinkers. An average of 14.2 drinks is consumed per person a month.
4. Reno, Nev.
The "biggest little city" is home to one of the nation's biggest binge drinking communities - 18.1 percent of the population. An average of 14.5 drinks are consumed per person a month in Reno.
3. Milwaukee
How much do people drink in Milwaukee? Almost 19 percent of the population are binge drinkers, and an average of 15.7 drinks are consumed per person a month.
2. Springfield, Mass.
Springfield, Mass. is high on the list of America's "drunkest" cities - 19.5 percent of the population are binge drinkers. Each month, an average of 14.6 drinks are consumed per person.
1. Boston
America's Drunkest City of 2011? Boston. In Beantown, a person consumes 15.5 drinks a month on average. And a whopping one in five people - 20.1 percent of the population - are binge drinkers.
