Trainees practice at Fort Benning, Ga. The base is one of the largest U.S. Army posts in the country with nearly 35,000 soldiers on active duty. It is also the nation's largest infantry training center. Many of the men and women serving combat duty in Iraq and Afghanistan completed basic training at Fort Benning.

"Most of my friends are like, 'Wow, I wonder what's going to happen in the next couple of years?' " Roberts said. "I know what I'm going to do. I'm going to join the Marines."
