Gloria Estefan
One of the most successful Latin crossover artists ever, Gloria Estefan and the Miami Sound Machine created many of the signature sounds of the 1980s and '90s. A winner of seven Grammys and six Billboard Latin Music Awards, Estefan recently released her 31st album, "The Standards," and has helped adapt her life story to the Broadway stage in the musical "On Your Feet!"

Born Gloria Garcia, she and her family were young Cuban immigrants among the first wave of exiles to arrive in Miami, fleeing the regime of Fidel Castro.
"It really irks me when I hear someone say that the American Dream is dead, because that cannot be further from the truth," Estefan told CBS News' Lee Cowan. "This is one of the few countries in the world that doesn't put limitations on you. Only you put them on yourself. If you're willing to work hard, and persevere and follow your dreams and your passion and get ready to get a lot of no's and find your way around those no's, this is the dream place to do that."
Miami Sound Machine
In 1975 Gloria Garcia joined the Miami Latin Boys, led by keyboardist Emile Estefan, Jr. Changing its name to Miami Sound Machine, the group made several Spanish-language recordings and the English-language "Eyes of Innocence," before landing its first major U.S. hit with "Conga" in 1986.

The band began recording as Gloria Estefan and the Miami Sound Machine, before dropping the group's name and performing under Estefan's name only.
Throughout her career Estefan hit the Top 10 more than 30 times, selling more than 100 million albums.

In March 1990, the group's tour bus was hit by an out-of-control tractor trailer on a snowy Pennsylvania highway; Estefan was critically injured, breaking her back.
After months of intense and painful physical therapy - up to seven hours a day - Estefan returned to the stage, performing at the 1991 American Music Awards, where she sang "Coming Out of the Dark."
