Duct tape fashions
It’s prom night in Ford City, Pa., and Clayton Cacurak and Shannon Stirling stick out - wearing prom attire made from 42 rolls of duct tape.
"I went with a traditional Southern-belle style, 'Gone With the Wind'-themed dress," said Stirling. "And Clayton has the matching Southern gentlemen's suit to match."
Duct tape was first introduced on the battlefields of World War II, as a waterproof tape for sealing ammunition cases. Today, it serves much more esoteric purposes, including some crafty fashions.

Patterns
When duct tape was first introduced, it was a drab, Army-green color. But during the housing boom of the 1950s, the tape became silver to match the duct work of your house.
At the Avon, Ohio, headquarters of Duck Brand, marketing director Scott Sommers showed CBS News 1,200-yard rolls of duct tape from their factory in North Carolina. They come in about 250 different styles - part of a strategy to move duct tape from hardware stores to craft aisles.
Belle Of The Ball
Duck Brand also hosts an annual scholarship contest, "Stuck at Prom," which awards a total of $50,000 in several categories.
Left: Caden Kluge and Ashton Woolen, of Woodstock, Ga., were 2013's first-place winners in "Stuck at Prom," with a Victorian/Modern Day combination featuring a recurring vine-and-flower pattern, in both her full, flowing skirt and red bustle, and his suit jacket. No. of rolls used: 120, in silver, red, white, chrome and black.
On Fire
These flame-inspired designs by Liz Gazca and Josh Flader, of Gilbert, Ariz., were the second-place winners of the 2013 "Stuck at Prom" competition. No. of rolls used: 24, in red, orange, yellow, gold, aqua and black.

Fish Scales
"Stuck at Prom" runners-ups Rebecca and Erich adorn a muslin dress pattern, an old tux and a garbage bag "vest" with more than 1,500 "fish scale" cuts of duct tape, in green, electric blue, orange, gold, blue, white, beige and chrome.

Peacocks

Bruce Lee Dress
In the New York suburbs, Richela Fabian Morgan is working on her own duct tape creation - a tribute to actor Bruce Lee. It started with the vest, she told CBS News correspondent Serena Altschul, but then kept going. "Yeah, you can't wear a vest without a dress!" laughed Morgan.

Richela Fabian Morgan can make just about anything out of duct tape: jewelry, hats, flowers, even paintings. Here she shows off her stencil of Tom Cruise that adorns a purse.
