These images provided by Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums show juveniles convicted of crimes in Newcastle, England between 1871 - 1873.

Above: Jane Farrell stole two boots and was sentenced to 10 hard days labor. Age (on discharge): 12.

James Donneley, also know as James Darley, 16, had been in and out of prison. On this occasion he was sentenced for two months for stealing some shirts.

John Reed was sentenced to 14 days hard labor and 5 years reformation for stealing money in 1873. Age (on discharge): 15.

Mary Catherine Docherty was sentenced to seven days hard labor after being convicted of stealing iron along with her accomplices: Mary Hinnigan, Ellen Woodman and Rosanna Watson. Age (on discharge): 14

At the young age of 11, Ellen was ordered to do 7 days hard labor after being convicted of stealing iron when caught with Mary Catherine Docherty, Rosanna Watson and Mary Hinnigan. These photographs are of convicted criminals in Newcastle between 1871 - 1873.

Henry Leonard Stephenson was convicted of breaking into houses and was sentenced to two months in prison in 1873. Age (on discharge): 12.

Sentenced to 3 months, Catherine Kelly was found guilty of stealing bed linen and was sent to Newcastle Gaol. Age (on discharge): 17.

Isabella Dodds was sentenced to four months at Newcastle Gaol for stealing a gold watch. Age (on discharge): 17.

At the young age of 14, Henry Miller was charged with the theft of clothing and sentenced to 14 days hard labor for his crime.

Michael Clement Fisher was 13 in this photograph and was an accomplice of Henry Leonard Stephenson. They were both charged with breaking in to houses and sentenced to two months in prison.

Robert Charlton, 16, was a laborer from Newcastle and was imprisoned for four months for stealing two pairs of boots.

An accomplice of the Duffy brothers, George Lamb was sentenced to four months in prison for stealing money. Age (on discharge): 17.

John Duffy along with his brother Peter Duffy and George Lamb were found guilty of assault and theft. He was imprisoned for six months. Age (on discharge): 16.

James Scullion was sentenced to 14 days hard labor at Newcastle City Gaol for stealing clothes. After this he was sent to Market Weighton Reformatory School for three years. Age (on discharge): 13.

John Divine was imprisoned at Newcastle City Gaol for six months after stealing money from another person. Age (on discharge): 17.

Margaret Cosh was convicted of stealing a coat, she had no previous convictions and served two months with hard labor. Age (on discharge): 15.

Isabella Hindmarch was convicted of stealing money, she had no previous convictions and served one month with hard labor. Age (on discharge): 16.

Richard Rimmington was convicted of stealing a pipe from a shop and was expected to serve 14 days with hard labor. He was spared his sentence when his parents agreed to pay costs and the resulting fine. Age (on discharge): 15.
