Dramatic volcano eruption in Chile
The Calbuco volcano in southern Chile roared back to life April 22, 2015 for the first time in more than five decades sending thick plumes of ash and smoke several 11 miles (18 kms) into the sky.

The volcano erupted again on Thursday, sending dark burst of ash and hot rock billowing into the air and prompting Chilean officials to order new evacuation of nearby residents. The eruptions at the Calbuco are the first in more than four decades. About 4,500 people have been evacuated since the April 22, 2015.

Ash from the volcano, which erupted without warning, reached as far as southern Brazil on Saturday and prompted some airlines to cancel flights to the capitals of Chile, Argentina and Uruguay.

Authorities ordered an evacuation for a 10-kilometer (six-mile) radius around the volcano, which is the second in southern Chile to have a substantial eruption since March 3, when the Villarrica volcano emitted a brief but fiery burst of ash and lava.

The volcano in southern Chile was still pouring ash into the sky on Thursday, forcing the cancellation of flights from nearby towns in both Chile and neighboring Argentina. The volcano, which last had a major eruption in 1961, has blown a spectacular plume of ash and smoke nearly 20 kilometers (12.4 miles) into the sky near Puerto Varas, some 1,000 kilometers (625 miles) south of Santiago.
